During my free time one day, I wandered down a lonely path into the woods and sat against a tree. Then I saw one of the camp counsellors approaching me. “Oh great,” I thought, since counsellors were always trying to cheer you up or make you laugh.
“Hey,” he said, “mind if I have a seat?” I shrugged. I wasn't going to encourage him, but I couldn't exactly stop him, either. He sat down alongside me and extended a hand. “I'm Gary,” he said, “and you're Erica, right?” I nodded. “You don't exactly look like you're having a good time,” he began.
I crossed my arms and gritted my teeth. “Look,” I said, “I didn't want to come to camp, I don't like it, I'm not having fun, and it basically stinks.” I glared at Gary.
“So there's nothing here at all for you, huh?” he asked.
“Nothing,” I answered.
“Let me show you something,” said Gary. He got up, and I followed him along the path until I heard a sound like a roaring freight train.
“What's that?” I asked.
“Wait and see,” he replied, with a small smile.
When we rounded the corner, I couldn't believe what I saw. There was the biggest waterfall I could ever imagine, right in front of me. “Cool!” I said, and I could feel my eyes getting bigger and a smile tugging at my mouth.
“Still think there's nothing here for you?” asked Gary. “Because there's a whole lot more of this kind of ‘nothing' around here.”
I had to admit, the waterfall was impressive.
“Look,” said Gary, “camp is what you make it. You can be sullen and closed-minded and have a rotten four weeks, or you can take a look around you and see some of the incredible sights and appreciate the opportunity. It would be useless for me to try to make you have fun. You can only do that for yourself. But if you loosen up a little, you might actually have a good time.” With that, he turned and walked away, leaving me on the path.
That night, by the campfire, I found myself singing along with everyone else. By the time the four weeks were up, I didn't want to leave. I'd seen some amazing things and made some great friends.
Beauty is where you find it. Life is what you make it. I think it's going to be a good year this year. I mean, I'm going to work to make it one. Maybe if I'm lucky, I'll get to go back to camp next year!
46. When Gary walked to Erica, you could predict that ________ .
A. he would help her feel better
B. she would say hello to him
C. he would talk about his life
D. she would tell him to go away
47. What happened to Erica after Gary talked to her?
A. She found out she was going away to camp.
B. She sat down against a tree.
C. She met another camper.
D. She saw a waterfall.
48. What can you tell about Erica from the ending of this story?
A. She has many close friends at home.
B. She is looking forward to the future.
C. She's a good student who gets mostly A's.
D. She often gets into trouble at school.
49. This passage supports the general idea that ________ .
A. most people don't know much about nature
B. summer camps are not as good as they used to be
C. most kids feel lonely at first when they're away from home
D. camp counsellors never really help anyone

People learn in different ways. (59) Researchers give different names to different learning styles, but they all agree that students who understand their own styles can improve their study skills. The learning styles described below (visual, auditory, and tactile) are just three of the many ways to identify how people learn.
Visual learners have to “see it to believe it”. They often have good imaginations (they can picture things in their minds), and they may also have a good sense of colour and artistic ability. These learners may have trouble listening to lectures or instructions if there are no pictures or text to support what they hear. They may also find it hard to focus in a room where people are moving around.
Auditory learners remember information if they hear it. They prefer to learn by listening and will often ask questions about things they read. Reading assignments can be difficult for these learners, and they can quickly lose their focus if there is too much noise in a room.
Tactile learners can learn and remember what they touch. That's why computers are a big help to these learners; the sense of touch (using the keyboard) helps them remember information. Tactile learners prefer to do “hands-on” activities such as role plays, science experiments, or projects that involve building. They learn better when they do some sort of physical activity. Tactile learners need to take frequent breaks when they study because they don't like sitting for long periods of time.
(60) One thing is true for all learners, whether visual, auditory, or tactile: in the world of education, one of the most important subjects is learning how to learn.
Questions 56—58: Complete the following table with no more than three words for each blank.

Pluto survives as solar system acquires three more planets
Scientists reach “natural” definition of a planet
Smaller bodies that meet criteria to be called plutons
Science textbooks will have to be ripped up(torn into small pieces); the solar system is about to get a bunch of new planets. Astronomers want to redefine our home in the Milky Way as a place with 12—rather than nine—planets moving around the sun. The proposal comes from a two-year project by the International Astronomy Union (IAU) to create the first ever scientific definition for the term “planet”. It will also mean that Pluto keeps its status as a planet, despite calls from many astronomers, revealed in the Guardian on Monday, that it should be demoted (reduced in importance) because of its diminutive (very small) size.
If the ideas are approved at the general meeting of the IAU in Prague next week, schoolchildren will, in future, have to learn that the solar system has 12 planets: eight classical ones that dominate the system—Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus—and four in a new category called plutons. These are Pluto, its moon Charon, a round asteroid that sits between Mars and Jupiter called Ceres, and an object called 2003 UB313 but nicknamed Xena by the American astronomers who found it.
The word “planet” comes from the ancient Greek for “wanderer” because early astronomers would see them moving in the sky against a stationary (not moving) backdrop of stars. Today, a planet is thought of loosely as a non-luminous (not producing its own light) object moving around a star, but with the advent of high-powered telescopes astronomers have found that this definition is too woolly—it could easily include thousands of comets and asteroids.
Questions 61—65: According to the passage, complete the following sentences.
61. Since the IAU began to redefine the term planet, the project has lasted ________ .
62. The main difference between classical planets and plutons is ________ .
63. Among the twelve planets, ________ is the nearest to Pluto.
64. The American astronomers who found 2003 UB313 nicknamed it ________ .
65. The word “wanderer” applies not only to planets but also to comets and asteroids because they all ________ .

A Letter of Apology
Dear Mr Zhang,
I was extremely concerned to receive your letter dated 10 October. Please accept my apologies for the inconvenience which you experienced in connection with the late arrival of the English exercise books which you ordered from us. I understand that the books were delivered to you yesterday safe and sound.
I have investigated this matter thoroughly and, it appears that our advertising campaign was successful beyond any of our expectations. Our entire range of books, especially the English exercise books, sold extremely well and quickly. We simply did not have enough stock in our storehouses to meet the extraordinary demand.
This would not normally be a problem as we deal with extremely efficient and speedy suppliers. However, it appears that they experienced a problem in their new computerised production process and were unable to supply us with as many English exercise books as we required.
We searched around for another supplier to help us out, but to no purpose. Being unwilling to accept goods of poor quality, we had no choice but to wait for our usual supplier to get their machinery fixed. When all is said and done, quality is what matters to most of our customers.
I am sorry that this has been such a series of accidents. As I have indicated, most of it was a result of circumstances beyond our control. Once again, my apologies for the inconvenience caused to you.
Yours sincerely, Ernest Blake Chief Manager Foreign Language Bookshop
Imagine that you are Zhang Hua. After receiving this letter from Mr Blake, you write an email to your friend Lucy, giving a brief account of the reasons that bookshop gave for the delay in delivering the English exercise books. Keep the length of your email to about 70 words. (答案写在答题纸上)
