VII. 写作(Writing)

A) One possible version:

This is a classic chain letter. The idea that everyone who participates in a chain letter will make money is mathematically impossible. This chain letter asks you to send the letter on to 100 people. If everyone who received a letter sent it on to 100 people, by the fifth mailing, ten billion people would receive the letter. That's more than the population of the world! The very first investors in the chain might receive money, but later investors rarely get back their original investment.

B) The first possible version:

In the 21st century, advances in technology such as the Internet, satellite and cable TV, and cell phones now

allow the public to get news 24 hours a day on demand, or whenever they want it. The Internet offers summaries of the news almost every time people go on-line. There are also many websites that make it easy to follow news events from the beginning to the end. All you have to do is type what interests you, and the story you want comes on the screen, along with links to related stories. Some people connect the radio station websites via the Internet, where they can listen to 24-hour news radio or hear discussions about the news on talk radio.

In order to compete with the Internet, some newspapers are changing the way they deliver the news. Yet most people question the truth of the news.

It will be interesting to see which type of source—high tech or traditional—wins the competition in the future.

The second possible version:

In the 21st century, people don't have to wait for a newspaper delivery or a TV news programme. By using technology, they can get the news any time of the day or night. However, most people used to read the morning newspapers and turn on radios or TVs in order to follow every single piece of news about this world. For a long time, people got their news the same way—they watch television, listen to the radio, or read the newspaper.

In order to compete with the Internet, some newspapers and TV stations are changing the way they deliver the news. Instead of reporting the news objectively, basing their stories on facts, they try to keep their readers' and viewers' interest by focusing on the most upsetting or shocking details of a story.

Different people have different tastes. They need a variety of news sources—high tech or traditional—to choose from.

11. M: Hi, Kathy. We're going to have a party this evening. Will you come?

W: Yes, I'd love to. What time?

    M: 6:30.

W: I'm afraid I will be a little late. My piano lesson finishes at 7:00.

    M: That's OK.

Q: When will Kathy go to the party?

12. M: Did you have a lot of friends when you were young?

W: I didn't really make any close friends then because I liked going off by myself in the morning during school holidays on my bike with a few books and a lunch in the basket, to find a quiet place to read.

Q: What did the woman like doing when she was young?

13. M: Which tie shall I wear for the interview? Do you think my blue silk one would look all right?

W: That's a bit boring! I'd wear something with a small pattern—squares or spots, something like that.

    M: Oh, I don't know. I think I'll wear the plain one.

Q: Which tie will the man wear?

14. M: Have you decided where you are going to live when you get married?

W: I would like to live in the city near my work, but my husband would like a house in the suburbs to save on expenses.

Q: Why does the woman want to live in the city?

15. M: Ah, Linda. Is the design for the conference centre ready?

    W: Er, no. I was...

M: You know I need it for tomorrow and I asked you to stop working on everything else until you have finished it.

W: I know. I've been working on it all day, but I haven't finished it yet. I'm sorry.

Q: Why is the man angry?

B) Listen to the following dialogue. According to the dialogue choose the best answer to each given question. The dialogue will be read twice.

M: I'd like to welcome someone special to our programme this evening to tell us about chimpanzees. We've discovered a lot about chimpanzees over the last 30 years, and this is mostly because of  the work of one person, Jane Goodall. Good evening, Jane.

W: Good evening, Steve, and thank you for inviting me to your show.

M: When did you first become interested in chimpanzees, Jane?

W: I began studying their behaviour in 1960, when I was only 26. I'd always wanted to work with animals, although I didn't have any special training or knowledge.

M: Where did you go to study their way of life?

W: I went to Tanzania in East Africa and worked in the Gombe Stream Chimpanzee Reserve. It's now called Gombe National Park.

M: Did the chimpanzees accept you immediately?

W: No, it took a long time. I used to spend all day with them, observing them and learning about their way of life. I found them fascinating and wanted to know as much as I could about them. However, they wouldn't let me get too close to them. It was only after 18 months of waiting that the chimpanzees finally decided I wasn't going to hurt them. They let me get close to them and accepted me as a part of the forest.

M: And now, more than 40 years later, you're still studying the chimpanzees in Tanzania?

W: Yes, I believe it's the longest continual study of any animal in the wild ever conducted.

M: I understand you've also set up centres in other African countries to look after chimpanzees which have been mistreated by people.

W: Yes, that's right. These centres take care of the many baby chimpanzees whose parents have been killed by hunters. They give these little orphans the chance to live in peace and safety.

Part IV. Passages

Passage A

Listen to the following material and choose the best answer to each question. The passage will be read twice.

Woman: First of all, Lambly School has contacted us to tell us all about the concert they are giving on Saturday evening; that's the 8th.

The music starts at 7:30 not at 7:00 o'clock as advertised, and will finish at about 8:30 after which coffee will be available. They say it's an evening of songs and dances for everyone. There'll be some food and drinks afterwards in the library.

That will be included in the cost of the ticket. Do go along to this concert as the school will use the ticket money to buy new sports equipment for the children. Last year's concert was a great success and the school was able to buy a new computer for the children to use and also pay for a trip to London.

Next, I have some details of a regular weekend activity. The Walking Club are going for a long distance walk around the lake this Sunday. Everybody is should meet at 10:00 am in the car park by the lake. Don't forget you can get a bus from the market square if you don't have any transport.

On Saturday evening, there's a talk for the International Club by a well-known local writer, Sarah Jones, who teaches at the university. You may have read her latest novel, which is being sold in all the bookshops at the moment. Well, she's giving a talk at 8:00 pm on Saturday evening in the library. That's the building next to the theatre, in the centre of town. I'm sure you'll find it very interesting. Sarah has just returned from Africa and will talk about all her experiences there. She travelled through three different countries and met lots of interesting people, including a famous actor. Now, the International Club would like to remind you that the talk is for everyone, not just members.

Passage B

Listen to the following material and fill in the missing information in the numbered spaces. The material will be read twice.

Man: Welcome to the Sunnington Sports Camp. Before you divide into groups, I'd like to give you some information about the plans for this week. During your time here you will play at least 12 different sports. In the morning there is a planned programme, but we offer you a choice of afternoon activity. You need to sign a list before midday today, saying which sports you'd like to do. The list is on the wall outside the changing room.

Now, clothes. You can wear your track suit for most sports, although you should also remember to bring shorts and a T-shirt each day as well, in case it's hot. We do both outdoor sports and indoor activities, so please make sure you have two pairs of sports shoes with you, too.

Lunch is served in the canteen at half-hour intervals between 12:15 and a quarter to two. Your group leader will tell you what time to start queuing outside the canteen. We also have a snack bar, where you can buy drinks, chocolate and biscuits, but a word of warning: Don't eat too much at a time, or you won't be able to run as fast!

At the end of the course, you will get a certificate, at one of six levels. We give you marks each day for a number of things. First, we look at your attitude: this includes things like effort, working as part of a team, and so on. Then we give you marks for your performance—your strength and speed, as well as your actual skill in each sport. All these marks go towards your final score, which is out of 200. The Level Six certificate goes to anyone who gets 180 marks or more.

Now, any questions?
