such与so用法种种

① 两者都可用作adj.

such作形容词时,无比较级和最高级, 遇不定冠词 a(n) 时, 要放在该冠词之前; 遇 all, no, one, few, several, some, any 等时则放在其后,意为“这样的;那样的”;so作形容词时, 意为“真的;属实的”。如:

One such dictionary is enough.   

If what you say is really so, I'll have to change my plan. 

② 两者都可用作pron.

such作代词时意为“这样的人; 如此的事物”,置于句首时用倒装结构;而so常用作 say, speak, think, hope, expect, suppose, imagine等动词的宾语。如:

He wrote to her every day, such was his love for her.

If you say so, I'll have to believe it. 

注意: a. so用来代替表语或谓语, 使用倒装语序,表示“后者也一样”。如:

Mary can speak Chinese, so can her brother. 

b. so代替上文提过的形容词、名词、动词等, 表示“那样的;的确”,用陈述语序。如: 

(2005安徽) —Maggie had a wonderful time at the party.

—________, and so did I.

A. So she had         B. So had she         

C. So she did         D. So did she

此题选C。So she did 译为“她的确玩得很高兴”; so did I译为“我也玩得很高兴”。

③ 两者都可用于“such / so... as”结构,意为“正如……那样”。其区别是such 修饰的中心词是名词,而so修饰的是形容词或副词。如:

Such people as you've described are difficult to find.

People are not so honest as they once were.

④ 两者都可用于“such / so... as to”结构,意为“如此……以至于”。而so as to则表示目的,意为“为了;目的是……”,相当于in order to。如:

We left for the station so early as to catch the first train.
