| 1. The fastest thing in space is light. Light travels at a speed of 300,000 km per second. 太空中最快的东西是光。光以每秒30万公里的速度传播。
at a speed of意思是“以……速度”,介词at意思是“以……”， 表示年龄、速度、价格、水平、比率等达到的某一定程度。如：
The train is travelling at a speed of sixty miles an hour. 火车正以每小时六十英里的速度行驶。
2. After his supper of kangaroo soup， Gork lay down on his bed and almost immediately fell asleep.吃过了晚餐袋鼠汤后，戈克躺在床上几乎马上睡着了。
短语动词 lie down 相当于不及物动词，意思为“躺下”。值得注意的是：动词lie用作“躺”时，它的过去式和过去分词为： lie—lay—laid, 用作“说谎”时：lie—lied—lied,现在分词为：lying。如：
Please lie down for a while．You are too tired. 请躺下来休息一会儿，你太累了．
3. As they hopped through the narrow opening, one at a time，he felt their backs with his hands to make sure we were not on them． 当他们从狭窄的开口跳出去，一次一个时，他用手摸袋鼠的后背，以确定我们没在它们身上。
at a time意为“一次，每次”，常用于“数词 ＋ at a time”的结构中。如：
Pass me the bricks two at a time． 把砖头递给我，每次两块。
4. “We can't get out on the kangaroos. We're done for.” “我们不能坐在袋鼠身上逃出去。我们完蛋了。”
be done for是英语中一种常用交流用语，意思为“完蛋了；累死了；不能用了”。 如：
If Jim fails this test, he will be done for. 要是吉姆这次考试不及格，他就完蛋了。 |
