| 1. George started swinging his hatchet and kept chopping for a while.
start doing sth. “开始做某事”。如：
We start working at 7:00. 我们7点钟开始工作。
keep doing something “一直 / 不停止地做某事” ,与该词组类似的词组是keep sb. doing sth. “让某人一直做某事”。如：
That little girl kept crying. It made Danny feel scared. 那个小女孩不停地哭，这使丹尼很害怕。
2. If we happen to pick up something that was lost by someone, ...
1) happen to do sth. “碰巧；偶然”，不能用进行时。如:
I happened to meet her when I wanted to see her. 当我正想见她时碰巧遇见了她。
happen to sb. “某人发生了……事”，主语为某事物。如:
What has happened to him? 他发生了什么事？
2) pick up “拾起；（用车）接某人”，其宾语如果是代词常位于up之前；如果是名词位于up前后皆可，但常位于up之后。
3. Being an adult means having the right to do certain things, such as getting a part-time job, voting, getting married, or getting a driving license.
1) the right(s) to do sth.“做某事的权利”
2) get married“结婚”，强调结婚的动作，属于结束性动词词组，不能与表示段时间的时间状语连用。而 be married“已婚的”，强调的是状态，属于延续性动词词组，可以和表示段时间的时间状语连用。如:
They got married in 2000. 他们是2000年结的婚。
They have been married for seven years. 他们已经结婚7年了。
4. It also means accepting the responsibilities that go along with these rights.
go along with “相伴；与……一起”，with之后接名词、代词或V-ing。如果其后接人称代词的话，要用宾格形式。如:
My sister wants me to go along with her to the supermarket. 我妹妹想让我与她一起去超市。
5. They no longer have to rely on their parents for money all the time.
1) no longer “不再……”，位于be动词或情态动词之后、实义动词之前，与其意思相同的是not... any longer。如：
He was no longer patient to us. = He wasn't patient to us any longer. 他对我们再也不那么耐心了。
2) rely“依赖；依靠；信任”，与depend on意思相同。常出现下列用法：
rely on sth. / sb. “相信……”。如: Can I rely on him? 我可以相信他吗？
rely on sb. for sth.“指望 / 依靠某人的……”。如：
It's impossible to rely on others' help. 指望别人的帮助是不可能的。
rely on sb. doing sth. / to do sth. “相信 / 指望某人会做某事”。如：
You can't rely on Jack finishing the work. 不要指望杰克会把工作做完。 |
