| 1. There is a big gap between the lives of the rich and the poor.
[解读] blind（失明的），deaf（聋的），disabled（残疾的），healthy（健康的） ／ sick（病弱的）， living（活的） ／ dead（死的）， rich（富有的） ／ poor（贫穷的），unemployed（失业的）以及其他某些说明人的性格或状态的形容词，前面加the时可以代表一类人。这一表达方式具有复数含义，所以动词也用复数形式，代词则用they。如：
The poor get poorer; the rich get richer．穷者愈穷；富者愈富。
They are building a school for the deaf and the dumb. 他们要为聋哑人办所学校。
2. Since then I have kept in touch with my new friends by writing letters.
[解读] (1) since then意为“从那时起”，通常与动词的现在完成时连用，指从过去某一时刻起到现在为止的一段时间。如：
She has lived here since then. 从那时以来，她就一直住在这儿。
Since then, the forests have grown.从那以后，森林成长起来了。
(2) keep in touch with意为“和……保持联系，保持接触”。如：
When they got there, they immediately got in touch with the embassy. 他们一到那里便与大使馆取得联系。
3. If a child fails to attend school, a government official will visit his or her home to find out why.
[解读] (1) fail to do sth. 意为“没能做到某事，未能做成某事”。 never fail to do意为“必定，未忘记……”如：
He never fails to write to his mother every week.他从来没有忘记每周给他母亲写信。
(2) find out意为“找出、发现、 查明”，多指通过调查、寻问、打听、研究之后 “搞清楚、 弄明白”，通常含有 “经过困难曲折”的含义，指找出较难找到的、无形的、抽象的东西。如：
Read this passage, and find out the answer to this question. 读这篇短文，找出这个问题的答案。
4. After the age of sixteen, students can either find a job or continue onto Higher Education.
[解读] either... or... 意为“或者……或者……、要么……要么……”，可用来连接两个在语法功能上相同，在结构上相称的并列成分。当它连接两个并列主语时，谓语应与or后面的主语在人称和数上保持一致。类似的结构还有neither... nor... , not only... but also... 等。如：
Either you or I am right. 不是你对，就是我对。
Neither dad nor my brother helps. 爸爸和哥哥都不会帮忙。 |
