| 1． A rich person gives you a large amount of money to use as you like. 一个有钱人给你一大笔钱让你随意花。(Pre-reading)
amount 的用法：
a. 作名词，意为“总额；数量”。
He only gave me 100 yuan—that's half the amount he owned me.他只给了我100元——这只是他欠我的钱的一半。
She spends a large amount of money on clothes every year. 每年她都要花大量的钱买衣服。
b. 作不及物动词，意为“总计；等于”，常与to搭配。
His income amounts to $50,000 every year. 他每年的收入总计5万美元。
Taking things from the supermarkets without paying amounts to stealing. 从超市拿东西不付钱就是偷盗。
c． 固定短语：
a large amount of 大量的; 许多的 = a lot of / a mass of / a large quantity of
in large / small amount 大量地 / 小额地
He bought many kinds of vegetables, but each in a small amount. 他买了很多种蔬菜，但每一种买的量都不多。
2． The next morning I'd just about given myself up for lost when I was spotted by a ship. 第二天早上，我正感到绝望的时候，一艘船发现了我。（Reading）
(1) give up 意为“投降；放弃”。
The escaped prisoner gave himself up. 那逃犯投案了。
Gradually the woman gave herself up and was carried away by the flood. 渐渐地，那个妇女放弃了求生，被洪水冲走了。
(2) spot 的用法
a. 可作及物和不及物动词，意为“发现，认出；弄污，加斑点于……”。
He spotted his girlfriend in the crowd. 他从人群中认出了他的女朋友。
Her dress is spotted with ink. 她的连衣裙上沾了点墨水。
b. 作可数名词，意为“斑点；污点；地点”。
There is a black spot on your coat. 你的大衣上有个黑色斑点。
3. I earned my passage by working as an unpaid hand, which accounts for my appearance. 我靠做义工来抵船费，这就是我衣冠不整的原因了。（Reading）
(1) which引导一个非限制性定语从句，指代前面整个句子的内容。
(2) account 的用法
a. 可作及物和不及物动词，意为“解释；说明；总计有；报帐”，常和for搭配。
Her illness accounts for her absence. 她因为生病，所以才缺席。
b. 用作可数名词，意为“理由；说明；帐目”。
You should give me an account of your absence yesterday. 你应该给我一个你昨天缺席的原因。
