第二部分 阅读理解 (共25小题。第一节每小题2分,第二节每小题1分;满分45分)

第一节 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

No country in the world has achieved equality of the sexes in the key areas of education, health, employment and politics, according to a new ranking of 115 nations published on Tuesday.

Sweden has gone furthest in eliminating (根除)inequality between men and women, followed by Norway, Finland and Iceland. The Philippines is the only Asian country in the top 10 and the United States comes in at 22. Yemen ranks bottom.

The ranking, called “the Gender Gap Index”, covers 90 percent of the world's population and was compiled (汇编) by researchers from Harvard University, the London Business School and the World Economic Forum. The index measures gaps between men and women in four areas: economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival and political empowerment.

The study shows the gender gap for health and survival is very narrow across the world. Based on a score of 1 meaning full equality and 0 a complete lack of equality, the range for all 115 countries is just 0.9796 to 0.9227. But when it comes to political empowerment—the ratio of women to men in parliament, ministerial positions, and heads of state over the past 50 years—the best performer is Sweden with a score of 0.5501 but Saudi Arabia is last with zero.

The Nordic countries benefited from a higher proportion of women in political office than many and this is the measure that hits the American ranking, despite its good scores elsewhere.

The Philippines scored well across the board and is one of only five countries to have closed the gender gap for both health and education. The others are Dominican Republic, France, Honduras and Lesotho.

China comes 63th in the ranking, with 53th on economic participation ranking, 52th on political empowerment and 77th on educational attainment. It falls down on health and survival rankings which was mainly caused by imbalance in both sex ratio.

41. “The Gender Gap Index” measures gaps between men and women in these areas EXCEPT ________.

A. educational attainment        B. employment

C. political empowerment         D. the status at home

42. Why does the United States come in the ranking at 22 as a developed country?

A. It can't meet all the demands of the people.

B. The higher employment of women in economy.

C. The lower proportion of women in political office.

D. In America, women don't get enough rights.

43. From the fourth paragraph, we learn ________.

A. women and men are almost equal for health and survival in the world

B. the gender gap between men and women will exist forever

C. the reason why the gender gap exists

D. women and men are almost equal

44. How many countries have closed the gender gap for both health and education mentioned in the passage?

A. 4.                            B. 5.

C. 6.                            D. 115.

Even though she lived more than 200 years ago, the famous English writer Jane Austen has been in the news a lot.

The only known portrait of Jane Austen is to be sold by auction (拍卖) in New York, and is expected to fetch between £200,000 and £400,000.

The oil painting, which experts believe was commissioned (委托) by the novelist's great-uncle in 1790, has been handed down from generation to generation and currently belongs to one of Jane Austen's descendants (后代).

There has been some doubt over the authenticity (真实性) of the portrait because some experts say the type of dress she is wearing in the painting is from the wrong historical period. However, others and the auction house Christie's, who are selling the painting, say the picture is a “true depiction” of the writer.

This is not the first time Jane Austen's image has caused controversy (争议). Earlier this year her publishers were criticized for giving her a makeover on the cover of a book about her life.

The publishers made changes to a sketch of Jane drawn by her sister. In the original picture Jane is wearing a cap, but in the new image the publishers have removed the cap, and added make-up and hair extensions.

Whatever she looked like, Jane Austen remains a British national treasure. Her books, such as Emma, Sense and Sensibility, and Pride and Prejudice, remain widely-read and have been successfully adapted for television and cinema. In fact, her works are still so popular that in a recent survey to mark World Book Day, the British public voted Pride and Prejudice the nation's favorite read—ahead of Harry Potter and The Lord of Rings!

45. On World Book Day, which book is rated the most popular?

A. Pride and Prejudice.          B. Harry Potter.

C. The Lord of Rings.            D. Emma.

46. Why do some people doubt the authenticity of the oil painting of Jane Austen?

A. Because she was wearing a hat.

B. Because her dress is different from the fashion of her period.

C. Because she is wearing her hair extension.

D. Because she didn't use make up.

47. What is the best title for the passage?

A. World Book Day

B. Sense and Sensibility

C. Jane Austen

D. A portrait of Jane Austen

48. From the passage, we can make a conclusion that ________.

A. a portrait of Jane Austen is sold at the highest price

B. Austen's works have caused an argument in Britain

C. Austen obtained fame only after she was dead 300 years

D. Austen still plays an important role in British literature

New York City is the largest city in America today. But in the 18th century it was smaller than Philadelphia and Boston. In early American history, Boston was the most important city in the country. Later, Philadelphia grew and became more important. In the early years of the 19th century, Philadelphia and Boston and New York remained more or less equal in size and importance. Finally, in 1823, an event took place that gave New York City, once and for all, its leading position. This event was the opening of the Erie Canal.

About 1815, when many Americans from the east coast had already moved towards the west, trade routes from the ports to the central regions of the country began to be a serious problem. The  slow wagons (货车) of that time, drawn by horses or oxen, were too expensive for moving heavy freight very far. Americans had long admired Europe's canals. In New York State, a canal seemed the best solution to the transportation problem. From the eastern end of Lake Erie all the way across the state to the Hudson River, there is a long strip of low land. Here the Erie Canal was constructed.

Thus, by means of the Canal, trade could move freely in both directions. Manufactured goods of the east were now brought to New York City, then shipped up from the Hudson River to Albany and through the Canal to the west. Farm products from the western states were sent east through the Canal to Albany, then down the Hudson River to New York City.New York City grew so rapidly with this increase in trade that within ten or fifteen years the state's economy had developed. And it had doubled in size. It left its rivals, Philadelphia and Boston, so far behind that they were never able to catch up again.

D. Rivers and Canals of America

A. in the early 18th century, New York was the most important city in America

B. New York City became the largest city in about the middle of the 19th century

The Moral Imagination

From Edmund Burke to Lionel Trilling

by Gertrude Himmelfarb Ivan R. Dee, 288 pp., $26

This is a complex, challenging book by one of the world's smartest and deepest scholars at the top of her game. It's a series of essays on modern thinkers, mainly British, from Edmund Burke and Jane Austen to Michael Oakeshott and Lionel Trilling. (The essays have appeared before, but most have been substantially revised for this book.)

Gertrude Himmelfarb's list is wide ranging, but her messages are clear: read meticulously (小心翼翼地) and without prejudice(偏见) and you can expect surprises—especially if you are a traditional liberal or a traditional academic who would rather think than act. A careful reader must not expect to see big pictures in the clouds. Truth is in the details, and is not necessarily dramatic. But if you stand back and look carefully, you just might catch a glimpse of the intellectual and spiritual battle that is being engaged in the background of these essays. The title—The Moral Imagination—hints at the nature of the battle.

Some of the pieces focus on a single work; most are small-scale intellectual biographies that take in huge amounts of ground. In either case, Himmelfarb resists the temptation(诱惑) that troubles nine out of ten of the world's celebrity intellectuals: to write books that, no matter what the topic, are all about themselves. Himmelfarb richly deserves to be an egomaniac (自我狂热者), but is not.

The single most important thing about The Moral Imagination is the challenge it gives to its readers. To make sense of this book, you must have your brain turned on every step of the way. Your first problem is to figure out what the title means. (Burke introduced the phrase “moral imagination”.) The author isn't so much interested in novel or imaginative ethical systems as in thinkers who present moral realities in original ways.

53. Which of the following expressions can best show the feature of the book?

A. Wide-ranging messages on the author herself.

B. A series of essays on modern thinkers from different countries: complex and challenging.

C. Detailed and always dramatic.

D. Easy to understand and get the details.

54. From the passage we can infer that ________.

A. some essays that have appeared before are ada-pted in The Moral Imagination

B. all the people can expect surprises if they read the book

C. the author is a smarter scholar but an egomaniac

D. the author is very interested in novel and imaginative ethical systems

55. The passage is mainly designed to ________.

A. encourage people to rewrite the classics

B. discuss how to write a biography

C. introduce a new book by Gertrude Himmelfarb

D. how to judge whether a book is good or not

56. If you want to buy this book, what will it cost you?

A. $13.                 B. $26.

C. $39.                 D. We have no idea from the introduction.
