1. Prisons and places like that cost honest taxpayers like me enough; and those who are badly off must go there.

The farmers say they are hundreds of times better off than that in the past.

In this respect the condition of American Blacks were even worse off than the Indians.

2.  Much good may it do you!

May it do you much good!

May you enjoy many years of health and happiness!

May you have a good journey!

(2) do sb. good意思是“给某人做好事;有益于某人”,也可以说do good to sb.。类似的还有do sb. harm“伤害某人”,do sb. wrong“冤屈某人”等。如:

It hailed during the night, which did great harm to the crops.

My grandpa was done great wrong during that period of history.

3.  Many thousands are in want of basic needs; ...

in want of与in need of同义,表 “需要,缺少”;注意与in want“贫困” 区别:

The western areas are badly in want of persons with high-tech knowledge.

There were many people who were in want after the war.

4.  These are but shadows of the past.

(1) but在此作副词,意为“只不过;只是”,修饰are shadows of the past。如:

Deeds are fruits, words are but leaves.

以外”,习惯搭配有:nothing but“只,仅仅”;anything but“决不”;all but“几乎”。还可以与who, what, no one等搭配。如:

It was a winter morning. There was nothing but snow that could be seen.

No one but himself knows what really happened.

5. That's not what life is about! You only have eyes for money.

(1)what life is about在句子中作表语从句。如:

My question is what has created the universe.

(2)而句子中的have eyes for sth. 注意与have an eye for sth.“能欣赏;有鉴赏力”区别。如:

He wants to get on in life very much and always has eyes for money and his position.

He has a good eye for ancient Chinese paintings.

6. Not at all, Bob, on the contrary.

I, on the contrary, envy you because you have a lot of freedom at work.

If I don't hear anything to the contrary, I'll meet you at 7:00 outside the cinema.
