1. Purposes

2. Useful Expressions

Formal expressions:

I've no idea.

I barely know how to...

Sorry, I really can't tell.

Sorry, I haven't the suitable idea.

Sorry, I don't know. Why don't you ask...?

I'm sorry. You might ask...

... told me once, but I don't remember.

I must admit, I don't know.

I have to admit I don't know much about...

I'm afraid I really have no idea.

I'm afraid I can't help you here.

I'm afraid I couldn't say.

I'm quite in the dark about it.

I'm sorry I don't know anything about that.

I couldn't say for sure.

I haven't the slightest idea about that.

I'm afraid I have to say I know very little about...

I'm sorry, but I'm not able to help you with your enquiry.

Informal expressions:

Who knows?

How should I know?

God knows.

Search me. (我真的不知道!)

I wish I knew.

Don't ask me.

I don't know the first thing about...

3. A Situational Dialogue

(Two students are talking about their new-coming teacher.)

A: Is that man talking with some students over there our new-coming teacher?

B: I've no idea.

A: Can you guess how old he is?

B: I really don't know. He must be in his late forties, judging from his appearance.

A: Someone says he's very strict with his students.

B: Oh, really? I haven't the slightest idea about that. But do you think he's a good teacher?

A: I couldn't say for sure. We'll find out about that later.
